PRIMARY PROGRESSIVE APHASIA

Primary progressive aphasia or PPA initially impacts one's language abilities and may slowly progress to impact other cognitive abilities like thinking and remembering. PPA is a syndrome that is part of an underlying brain disease such as Frontotemporal dementia or Alzheimer's Disease. One may experience difficulty finding words or forming sentences. Therapy for PPA may require multiple phases of treatment, with goals focused on the individual and maximizing their personhood and participation in life.

SPEECH ~ DYSARTHRIA

Many adults experience difficulty with their speech due to a stroke or TBI, oral cancer, or progressive neurological disease. Adult speech therapy will focus on retraining the muscles of the mouth, lips, and tongue, as well as addressing breath support. We will also teach compensatory strategies and help obtain and set up augmentative communication devices to optimize communication.

LANGUAGE ~ APHASIA

Adults with aphasia may experience difficulty finding words or forming sentences, speaking in sentences that do not make sense, using unrecognizable words, or understanding words or conversation. Language therapy for adults will support both the retraining of the language centers of the brain as well as the teaching of strategies to aid in the ability to communicate and participate in daily activities.

COGNITION-COMMUNICATION

Cognitive-communication therapy targets cognitive processes such as attention, memory, multi-tasking, managing the tasks of daily living, etc. Adults recovering from a head injury, surgery, or stroke, or who are experiencing challenges related to aging, dementia, or progressive neurological disorders, benefit from cognitive therapy. Through rehabilitation and teaching specific strategies, clients are able to re-engage in their work, social, academic, and everyday activities.
